Brief Profile of the Municipality of Hungduan

The Municipality of Hungduan is one of the eleven (11) component municipalities of Ifugao. It is bounded on the East by Banaue, on the South by Kiangan, on the Southwest by Tinoc, on the Northwest by Sabangan, Mt. Province and on the North by Bontoc, Mt. Province. Hungduan is directly accessible from Banaue through the rugged Banaue-Hungduan-Tinoc national road. It is approximately 356 kilometers to Manila or about 14 hours trip by land.

The total municipal land area of Hungduan is 22,911 hectares. The elevation ranges from 700 to 2,700 MASL. Napulawan at 2,642 MASL in Barangay Poblacion and the 2,715 MASL of the Mt. Polis range located atop Barangays Nungulunan and Bokiawan.

Hungduan has mountainous topographic landscape with 73% having a slope greater than 50%. Almost one half of the land area, particularly on the western portion, are forestlands. The rice terraces, which form part of the UNESCO-declared heritage site, are located on the eastern side surrounded by grasses and shrubs and small-medium patches of clan-owned forests.

The vast forest cover serves as headwaters of 3 major rivers, namely: Hapao and Dakkitan rivers that flow northeast and the Galung River which flows in an easterly direction. All these rivers and their tributaries ultimately drain towards the Ibulao River - the major supplier of water to the Magat Hydro-Electric Dam and the Magat River Irrigation System (MARIS) in Isabela Province.

The Municipality of Hungduan falls under Type IV of climatic classifications. It is characterized by the even distribution of rainfall throughout the year. On the average, the hottest months of the year are April and May while the coldest months are December and January. The mean temperature ranges from 18-28 degrees centigrade.
